Government Prioritise Tricycles, Videos & Fish Ahead of Blood Safety
Monday 1 March 2010
We are disgusted - but maybe not entirely surprised - to see that Lord Morris's Contaminated Blood (Support for Infected and Bereaved Persons) Bill has been listed in 19th position on the House of Commons Business Order for Friday 5th March. It is last but one on the list, falling below Bills on such topics as: Garden Protection, Video Recordings and Pedicabs (A tricycle usually powered by pedalling).
Naturally we now anticipate that the Whips office will put another person in charge of saying: 'Object' when the Bill is read out at the end. Our message to that person is this:
Be under no illusions here. When you speak the word 'Object', hiding behind Government protocol is absolutely no excuse. You alone are responsible for your words and your conscience. You alone will have to decide whether you want to be the latest in a long line of Government puppets stretching back nearly thirty years, or do you want to be the one to break the mould and stand up for truth and justice? Let us make it clearer: Every delay means that another victim of NHS blood products slips closer to certain death. By saying that one small word you will play your part in denying people peace of mind as they die. You will play your part in prolonging poverty, deepening anguish and compounding desperation. Is that what you want to be remembered for? Or would you prefer to go down in history as the person who was strong enough to say : 'NO. It's wrong.'
